Golden Ring Fortune Slip

Third Song: Water Thunder Dun, Lord Bao Investigates Guo Huai

Truth and falsehood can no longer be deceived,

Even ghosts and spirits know when evil is done in secret.

The precious mirror hangs high, bright as water,

There will always be a day of reckoning.

Hexagram interpretation:
The character "屯" signifies the beginning of all things. This hexagram is generated by the mating of "Heaven" from the Qian (乾) hexagram and "Earth" from the Kun (坤) hexagram. The lower trigram (Zhen 震) transforms from the Qian hexagram by one yang line entering the Kun hexagram, replacing the yin line at the initial position with a yang line. Furthermore, this yang line desires to ascend and unfurl. The upper trigram (Kan 坎) is formed when one yang line from the Qian hexagram mates and enters the Kun hexagram, replacing the yin line sandwiched in the middle with a yang line. This signifies a "yang" being trapped between two "yin" lines, experiencing distress. It is comparable to grass and trees: this hexagram represents seeds sprouting in the soil and emerging above the surface. It is like a tender sprout, just emerged, being tormented by the fragility it experiences in the face of wind and rain. In terms of "humans," it corresponds to the infant stage. In terms of a nation, it signifies the period of founding and establishing a new enterprise. Because this hexagram is born from the initial union of heaven and earth, it is thus named the "Tun" hexagram.

Face it head-on
Easier than dodging and weaving!

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Bao Zheng, courtesy name Xiren, was from Luzhou and served as an official in China's Northern Song Dynasty, renowned for his integrity and impartiality. He was once a scholar of the Tianzhang Pavilion, and was known as "Bao Daizhi." Later, he advanced to become the director of the Longtu Pavilion, hence he is also referred to as "Bao Longtu." He was posthumously awarded the title Xiaosu and gifted the position of Minister of Personnel. His incorruptibility and impartiality, along with his refusal to associate with the powerful, earned him the names "Bao Qingtian" and "Bao Gong." In later generations, he was worshipped as a deity, believed to be the reincarnation of the Wenqu Star, and after his death, he became the Fifth King of Hell. His black-faced image also led to him being called "Bao Heizizi" and "Bao Heitan."

Annotation

Truth cannot be deceived: Facts are facts, and truth and falsehood cannot be covered up. Evil deeds done in secret are known to gods and spirits: Evil deeds done in secret are known to gods and spirits, and are all recorded. A precious mirror hangs high, clear as water: Officials should be as clear as water at the bottom and as bright as a mirror hanging high. (A metaphor for Bao Gong's integrity and justice) There will always be a time for clear retribution: There will always be a time when the truth comes out and retribution is received.

Vernacular

Truth and falsehood can never be hidden. If you do evil in secret, ghosts and gods know it all and record it. It's like Lord Bao, who held his bright mirror high, dispensing justice impartially. Every case will eventually come to light, and retribution will follow soon thereafter.

Fortune telling by lot

Empress Liu (Liu E), filled with jealousy, let her wickedness grow from it. She secretly instructed her trusted eunuch, Guo Huai, to sneak into Biyun Palace and switch the imperial prince born to Consort Li Chen with a dead cat. It wasn't until Bao Zheng of the Kaifeng Prefecture, on imperial orders, went to the countryside to aid in disaster relief and was passing through Chen Wu upon his return that he took on the case. Through painstaking investigation, the truth was finally revealed, and Guo Huai was brought to justice. This fortune stick signifies that everything is still unclear and requires effort and struggle to achieve success. Wealth and status are predestined by fate; with the same talent and effort, success is not always guaranteed. Do not act rashly; patience is most important. Everything will develop after autumn, around the beginning of winter.

Divination Meaning
