Hexagram interpretation:
The "Li" trigram signifies "adherence" and "brightness." In terms of its form, one Yang line is situated between two Yin lines, adhering to them (the upper and lower trigrams are the same). Concurrently, "Li" symbolizes fire. Fire is abstract; it has no shape. It only gives people a sensation of "energy." It only reveals its shape when it adheres to something. Thus, it appears much brighter. We observe that all things in the universe tend to "gather their own kind" and adhere to them. Adhering to the righteous path leads to lasting prosperity. For example, the sun, moon, and stars adhere to the heavens; grains and vegetation adhere to the earth; parents adhere to benevolence; children adhere to filial piety, and so on. All these adhere to the righteous path and find their rightful place. Therefore, this trigram implies the profound principle that those who adhere to the righteous path will flourish, while those who adhere to evil ways will inevitably fail and perish.

Time is what can never be gotten back.
What is lacking is space.

Interpretation of fortune stick person

Nan Rong then refers to Gong Kuo, a student of Confucius, whose courtesy name was Zirong. The Master said of Nan Rong: "When the country has the Way, he is not neglected; when the country is without the Way, he escapes punishment and death." In other words, Nan Rong was adept at navigating society and knew how to conduct himself appropriately. Because of this, his teacher Confucius admired him greatly, even marrying his own niece to him. Nan Rong would recite "Bai Gui Zhi Dian" three times: Nan Rong would always read aloud several times a day the poem "Bai Gui Zhi Dian" from the Book of Songs, which advises people to be careful in their speech.

Annotation

Studied diligently for many years under a cold window. To polish and temper assiduously, one's aspirations become even firmer. The polishing and honing of virtue and writing; to work hard and diligently, to cultivate one's character, and forge a strong will. Not for success and the pursuit of wealth and nobility. The tradition has not been lost, inheriting the will of former sages. Heaven is about to destroy this tradition; those who come later will not be able to participate in this tradition. (This: this; tradition: rites and music, and systems.) Later, "tradition" refers to scholars or culture. This tradition refers to Confucius's disciple Nan Rong. Nan Rong did not sacrifice himself because of this, but continued the legacy of the former sages and virtuous scholars.

Vernacular

Nan Rong studied diligently under the cold window for many years, working hard and persevering. His will was strong, and he cultivated his character not for future success or glory, but to inherit the legacy of the ancient sages and virtuous scholars.

Fortune telling by lot

When Nan Rong and Confucius were not appreciated in the state of Lu (under Duke Ding of Lu), he later followed Confucius on his travels through the various states. The poem "Bai Gui Zhi Dian" from the Book of Songs advises one to be careful with their words, warning the world that "too much talk leads to mistakes." Nan Rong cultivated himself and lived a life of contentment, detached from fame and fortune. Therefore, receiving this fortune slip means that "May the times be peaceful and safe," and he does not ask for added blessings or longevity. Contentment can bring constant joy, and safety is fortune.

Divination Meaning

This hexagram's name is "Li," meaning attachment. It reveals that all things in the world depend on something. In human society, attachment should be gentle, cautious, and follow the principles of the righteous path. In contrast to the Kan hexagram, which emphasizes the strength of the inner core, this hexagram favors a gentle inner core. It symbolizes wisdom, brightness, and warmth. As a "six-striking" hexagram and a "pure" hexagram, it signifies extreme fortune and misfortune, and extreme good and bad. It also represents illusory and unreal appearances. Fire is the gas produced by burning objects, thus it must attach to something to manifest its power. This extends to the idea that one must have the ability to rely on something to continue to exert influence.
